Cable Laying Operations (EUSR)
Who Should Attend
This programme provides managers, supervisors and operatives with the knowledge, skills and practical understanding required to carry out the safe, compliant and correct installation and laying of LV, HV & 33kV cables within utility environments. It has been developed to support those responsible for planning, overseeing or undertaking cable installation activities, ensuring that all personnel understand the technical, procedural and safety requirements associated with modern distribution networks.
Participants will explore the full lifecycle of cable laying operations — from pre‑installation planning and risk assessment through to correct handling, preparation, installation, jointing interfaces, backfilling and reinstatement. Emphasis is placed on recognising hazards, implementing safe systems of work, and applying industry‑approved techniques.
A key focus of the programme is maintaining the integrity, reliability and long‑term performance of the network. Candidates will gain an understanding of how poor installation practices can lead to cable damage, faults, service interruptions and costly remedial work. Through a combination of classroom learning and practical exercises, the programme reinforces the importance of correct installation methods, appropriate use of equipment, and adherence to utility specifications and standards.
Prerequisites
Familiarity in the principles of cable laying operations.
Aims
By the end of the programme, participants will be equipped to contribute to safer worksites, reduce operational risk, and ensure that LV, HV & 33kV cable installations are completed to a high standard of technical quality and compliance.
Objectives
- Locate existing underground apparatus using approved detection equipment.
- Prepare ducts and trenches safely and correctly.
- Understand and apply different cable‑laying techniques and methods.
- Identify a range of LV, HV & 33kV cable types and their characteristics.
- Recognise common cable faults and understand how poor installation practices contribute to them.
- Install cables correctly in both trenches and ducts.
- Fit and secure cable end caps appropriately.
- Understand cable pulling tensions, cable drum handling, and the safe use of jacks.
- Understanding the importance of safe winch operation, including correct setup and ancillary equipment (rollers, guides, skid plates).
- Understand the importance of safe bend radius and tension control during winching operations.
- Understand LV, HV & 33kV jointing and termination types.
- Record, report and communicate deviations and produce accurate as-laid documentation.
